Historic Forts of Muscat

Muscat’s harbor is framed by a network of 16th-century Portuguese fortifications and Omani defensive structures. These sites, including the twin forts of Al Jalali and Al-Mirani, were strategically positioned to protect the city from maritime invasions. The list features well-preserved examples of military architecture, ranging from massive harbor-side strongholds to restored fortified houses like Bait Al-Maqham, reflecting the region's long history of coastal defense and maritime trade.

Fort Al-Mirani

Completed by the Portuguese in 1587, this harbor-side fortification features circular towers and commands the western entrance to the bay. While the interior is generally closed to the public, it remains a dominant landmark of the Old Muscat skyline.

Mutrah Fort

This 16th-century Portuguese fort sits atop a rocky hill overlooking the Mutrah Corniche. It features three circular towers and is open to visitors, offering panoramic views of the harbor and the surrounding volcanic mountains.

Al Jalali Fort

Originally known as Forte de São João, this 1587 Portuguese stronghold guards the eastern entrance to Muscat harbor. Formerly used as a prison, it now serves as a private museum for state guests and historic cultural artifacts.

Bait Al-Maqham

An 18th-century fortified house located in the Bausher district. This restored three-story structure showcases traditional Omani defensive residential architecture, featuring thick mud-brick walls and strategic watch points.

Castle

A historic defensive watchtower overlooking the Muscat harbor. These stone structures were built on high ridges to provide early warning of approaching ships and to support the larger harbor-side fortifications.
