Historic Forts & Castles

Oman’s landscape is defined by over 500 historic fortifications that protected its trade routes and oases. This collection spans UNESCO World Heritage sites like Bahla Fort to the Portuguese-built coastal batteries of Muscat. These structures showcase evolving military architecture, from 12th-century mud-brick walls to the sophisticated 17th-century circular towers of Nizwa and the reinforced administrative strongholds of the Dhofar region.

Al Baleed Archaeological Park

UNESCO World Heritage site featuring the ruins of the medieval port of Zafar. The park includes excavated remains of a 12th-century citadel, a Grand Mosque, and the Land of Frankincense Museum.

Nizwa Fort

The Nizwa Fort is a large castle in Nizwa, Oman built in the seventeenth century. It is a popular tourist destination.

Bahla Fort

Oman's only UNESCO-listed fort, built from mud-brick and straw between the 12th and 15th centuries. It features a 12-kilometer wall that once protected the surrounding palm groves and oasis.

Khor Rori

Khor Rori is a bar-built estuary at the mouth of Wādī Darbāt in the Dhofar Governorate, Oman, near Taqah.

Nakhal Fort

Nakhal Fort is a large fortification in Al Batinah Region of Oman. It is named after the Wilayah of Nakhal.

Fort Al-Mirani

A 16th-century Portuguese fortification overlooking Muscat harbor. It was built during the colonial occupation to defend the port and remains a prominent landmark near the Al Alam Palace.

Mutrah Fort

Constructed by the Portuguese in the 1580s, this fort sits on a rocky ridge above Mutrah Corniche. It features three circular towers and historically served as a primary maritime defense point.

Mirbat Fort / hsn mrbat

A defensive structure in the Dhofar region overlooking the old harbor. It is known for its role in the 1972 Battle of Mirbat and now houses a museum of local history.

Taqah Fort

A 19th-century fort that served as both a defensive structure and a private residence for a local Sheikh. It features traditional Omani living quarters, kitchenware, and historic weaponry displays.

Al-Sunaysilah Castle

A 300-year-old square castle in Sur featuring four circular corner towers. It was strategically positioned on a hill to provide a lookout for land-based attacks against the coastal town.

Al Hazm Fort

An 18th-century Yarubi dynasty stronghold distinguished by its architectural lack of wooden ceiling rafters. The structure relies on massive masonry arches and features intricate wood carvings and hidden tunnels.

Rustaq Fort

A massive fortification with pre-Islamic foundations, expanded in the 17th century. It contains four towers, an integrated falaj irrigation system, and served as the seat of power for the Yarubi imams.

Al Jalali Fort

A 16th-century Portuguese fortress built on a rocky outcrop in Muscat. Originally named Forte de São João, it once served as a prison and now houses a museum of Omani heritage.

Jalan Bani Bu Ali Fort

A historic mud-brick fortification in the Sharqiyah region. It stands adjacent to the Al Hamooda Mosque, which is famous for its unique architecture featuring 52 small domes.

Fort Jalan Bani Bu Hassan

A restored 19th-century defensive complex with a large central courtyard and circular towers, built to secure inland trade routes and protect the local settlement.
