Vyskov

Vila · Morávia do Sul, 🇨🇿 Tchéquia

Vyškov is a small Moravian town about 30 km east of Brno, easy to combine with a wider South Moravia trip or worth a night on its own. Its compact, walkable old town centres on a colourful historic square, with roots going back to the medieval Olomouc bishopric.

The town also makes a good base for the wooded Drahanská vrchovina highlands just north of the centre, and it sits close enough to Slavkov u Brna, site of the 1805 Battle of Austerlitz, for an easy day trip. Families find plenty to do here too, with a zoo, a dinosaur park and a water park all near the centre.

Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant for walking the old town, summers are warm, and winters are cold with some snow. July and August bring the warmest, driest days, good for the zoo, water park and other outdoor sights; January and February are the quietest and coldest months.

Principais atrações

Vyškov Castle anchors the town, a Gothic stronghold turned Renaissance and Baroque residence for the Olomouc bishops. Napoleon stopped here in November 1805 on his way to the Battle of Austerlitz, and the building now holds a regional museum with folk ceramics and local history exhibits.

The Plague Column stands on Masarykovo náměstí, the town's triangular main square, raised in 1719 to mark the end of a plague epidemic.

Near the town cemetery, the Cemetery Church of Our Lady began life in the early 1600s as a Capuchin monastery church and was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Vyškov Zoo is one of the town's most popular draws, a compact zoo with camels, lemurs and llamas that makes an easy stop for families.

Next door, Dinopark Vyškov fills four hectares with life-sized animatronic dinosaurs, a paleontological playground and a 4D cinema.

Aquapark Vyškov has pools and waterslides for a few hours of downtime, especially useful on a hot summer afternoon.

Military history fans should visit the Aviation and Ground Technology Museum, an open-air collection of aircraft, helicopters and ground vehicles built with the Czech Army.

O que experienciar

A couple of things are worth timing a visit around or setting aside time for:

  • Join the Festival Uprostřed města each spring, when live music, a craft market and food stalls fill Masarykovo náměstí to mark the start of the tourist season.
  • Set out on foot or by bike into the Drahanská vrchovina highlands, whose wooded trails and viewpoints begin right at the edge of town.

Passeios de um dia

Vyškov sits well placed for day trips across Moravia, from a Napoleonic battlefield nearby to a UNESCO-listed garden and a cave system a little further out:

  • Slavkov u Brna — ≈25 min by car. See the Baroque chateau and battlefield memorials of the 1805 Battle of Austerlitz, one of Napoleon's best-known victories.
  • Brno — ≈30–45 min by direct train or car. Moravia's capital has a lively old town, the Špilberk fortress and a strong café and brewery scene.
  • Moravian Karst via Blansko — ≈40 min by car. Tour the Punkva Caves and look down into the Macocha Abyss, a limestone sinkhole about 138 metres deep.
  • Kroměříž — ≈45 min by car. Walk the UNESCO-listed gardens of the Archbishop's Chateau, one of the finest Baroque garden complexes in Central Europe.
  • Olomouc — ≈50 min by car, or about 1.5 hours by train with a change. A historic university city with its own UNESCO-listed Holy Trinity Column and a large old town.

Onde explorar

For more of South Moravia, Brno and Blansko both make easy add-ons to a Vyškov stay — the region's biggest city and a well-preserved smaller town on the edge of the Moravian Karst. History-minded travelers may also want to combine a visit here with Slavkov u Brna, the town behind the Battle of Austerlitz.

Como chegar

  • By air: the closest airport is Brno–Tuřany (BRQ), which has only limited seasonal and charter service; a taxi or bus from there to central Vyškov takes about 40 minutes. Most travelers fly into Vienna (VIE) or Prague (PRG) instead and continue by train via Brno, roughly 3 hours in total.
  • By train: Vyškov sits on the direct line to Brno (≈30–45 min), with onward connections east toward Přerov and Olomouc (about 1.5 hours, with a change).
  • By bus: regional coaches link Vyškov with Brno and nearby towns, useful for a few destinations the train does not reach directly.

Como se deslocar

  • On foot: the historic centre is compact, and everything from the main square to the castle is a short walk away.
  • Public transit: local buses reach the outer districts and the zoo/aquapark area, with tickets bought on board; most visitors staying in the centre will not need them.
  • Taxi: local taxi firms operate around town, though ride-hailing coverage is thinner than in Brno.

Conduzir

  • Is a car worth it? Not for the town centre, which is compact and walkable, but a car makes exploring the Moravian Karst and the Drahanská vrchovina highlands much easier.
  • Parking: metered spaces ring Masarykovo náměstí; free parking is usually easy to find a short walk from the centre.
  • Restrictions: no low-emission or congestion zones apply.

Comida e bebida

Vyškov sits in the fertile Haná region, known across Moravia for hearty, farm-based cooking — expect dumplings, roast pork and local sausages on most menus alongside standard Czech classics.

For a meal, head to the cafés and restaurants around Masarykovo náměstí, where most of the town's dining options cluster within a short walk of each other.

Segurança e saúde

Vyškov is a quiet, low-crime town, and typical tourist activities carry no particular risk. The only thing worth a little care is petty theft in crowds during busy events like the spring festival — keep bags and valuables close.

História

Vyškov is first recorded in 1141 and was raised to a town under the Olomouc bishops in the mid-13th century, who held it for centuries afterward. Vyškov Castle began as their Gothic stronghold before Bishop Karl II von Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn rebuilt it in the Baroque style in the 1660s and 1670s, adding gardens so admired they earned the town the nickname "Moravian Versailles" — and reportedly inspired the later, UNESCO-listed gardens at Kroměříž. A fire in 1753 damaged the chateau, and the town never fully regained that standing.

The chateau found itself at the centre of events again in November 1805, when Napoleon stopped there to meet his generals days before the Battle of Austerlitz. After the battle, the defeated Tsar Alexander I and Emperor Francis II reportedly spent a night at the chateau — a scene said to have influenced Tolstoy's War and Peace. World War II brought heavy fighting to the area, and Vyškov was not liberated until the end of April 1945.
