Geological Wonders
Altyn-Emel National Park preserves a diverse range of geological formations in southeastern Kazakhstan. The Aktau Mountains showcase multi-colored sedimentary layers formed from an ancient seabed, while the Katutau range consists of frozen volcanic lava and ash shaped by millions of years of erosion. Historical sites include the Oshaktas stone stelae, believed to be a hearth site for Genghis Khan’s troops. These sites offer a glimpse into the region's Tethys Ocean past and its volcanic history.
Stella Oshaktas
Three stone pillars standing approximately two meters high. Local legend attributes the structure to Genghis Khan’s army, who supposedly used the stones as a giant hearth to support a massive cooking cauldron.
Kysty-Kalkan
Part of the Kalkan mountain range, these peaks represent the diverse tectonic and volcanic activity characteristic of the Altyn-Emel region.
Katautau
Remnants of ancient volcanic activity featuring frozen lava flows and intricate rock shapes formed by wind and water erosion over millions of years.
Kotutau Mountains
Volcanic range characterized by dark, jagged peaks and unique formations created from cooling magma and subsequent environmental weathering.
Red Mountains
Distinctive red-hued hills composed of iron-rich clays and sedimentary rock, located adjacent to the Aktau range.
Aktau
Also known as the White Mountains, these multi-colored sedimentary hills were once the floor of the ancient Tethys Ocean. They contain significant paleontological sites with fossils of prehistoric rhinos and crocodiles.
