Iconic Azores Lighthouses

The Azores archipelago features a network of historic lighthouses strategically positioned along volcanic cliffs and rugged headlands. These maritime landmarks range from the ruins of Farol da Ribeirinha, damaged by a 1998 earthquake, to the partially buried Farol dos Capelinhos, a relic of the 1957 volcanic eruption. Each beacon, such as the 19th-century Farol do Arnel, highlights the islands' architectural heritage and provides critical navigation across the central Atlantic.

Farol da Ponta dos Capelinhos

Partially buried by a 1957-1958 volcanic eruption, this lighthouse now serves as an interpretation center. It stands within a stark, lunar-like landscape created by the accumulated ash and volcanic debris.

Farol do Arnel

Established in 1876, this is the oldest lighthouse in the Azores. It is situated on the northeastern tip of São Miguel near Nordeste and is accessible via a steep, narrow road.

Farol das Lajes das Flores

Located on the southern coast of Flores, this white masonry tower with a red lantern was completed in 1910 to guide ships through the westernmost islands of the archipelago.

Farol do Albarnaz

Situated on the northwestern tip of Flores, this lighthouse overlooks the nearby island of Corvo. The site includes a white tower and residential quarters for the lighthouse keepers.
