Briançon Fortifications

Briançon’s defensive network, a UNESCO World Heritage site, represents the pinnacle of mountain fortification designed by military engineer Vauban. Constructed between the 17th and 19th centuries, this high-altitude complex protected the strategic Alpine border with Italy. The system includes the massive Fort des Têtes, the unique Communication Y gallery, and several satellite forts like Salettes and Randouillet, all positioned to control the Durance, Guisane, and Clarée valleys.

Fort des Têtes

The largest structure in the complex, situated on a plateau 1,440 meters high. Designed by Vauban to house 1,200 men, it is connected to the old town via the historic Asfeld Bridge.

Fort d'Anjou

An 18th-century fortification built between 1724 and 1734 to defend the southern approaches and the road to Gap. It features bastioned walls and a central courtyard.

Fort du Randouillet

The Fort du Randouillet, is a fortification in the vicinity of Briançon in the Dauphiné region of southeastern France.

Fort de l'Infernet

The Fort de l'Infernet is a fortification complex near Briançon in the French Alps.

Fort des Salettes

Completed in 1712 based on Vauban's designs to block the road from Italy. The site features a central square tower surrounded by a defensive gallery of counter-mines.

Fort de la Croix-de-Bretagne

The Fort de la Croix-de-Bretagne is a fortification in the vicinity of Briançon in the Dauphiné region of southeastern France.

Fort Dauphin

An advanced 18th-century post built to monitor the Vallon du Fontenil. It served as a protective screen for the higher-altitude Fort des Têtes and Fort du Randouillet.

Communication Y

A 200-meter-long vaulted, covered gallery built between 1724 and 1734. It provides a secure, bomb-proof passage connecting Fort des Têtes with the higher Fort du Randouillet.

Fort du Château

Situated at the highest point of the old town on the site of a medieval castle. This citadel was extensively modified by Vauban to serve as the town's primary urban defense.
