Chile’s diverse geography contains several secluded sites, from the iron remains of the Lord Lonsdale shipwreck in the Strait of Magellan to the abandoned Tinoco railway tunnel in Cajón del Maipo. In the north, the Quebrada de Jerez oasis and the historic stone architecture of Plaza Toconao offer insights into Atacama culture. Further south, the Islotes de Puñihuil serve as a rare cohabitation site for Humboldt and Magellanic penguins. These locations highlight industrial history, colonial heritage, and unique ecological niches.

Lord Lonsdale Shipwreck

These iron remains of an 1899 sailing ship sit on the shores of the Strait of Magellan. The vessel was scuttled in 1909 following a fire on board.

Quebrada de Jerez

Explore this unique wooded area with an oasis. There are even pools suitable for swimming.

Túnel Ferroviario Tinoco

A 600-meter-long former railway tunnel on the historic Puente Alto-El Volcán line. Built in the early 20th century, the tunnel is now a pedestrian route through the mountains.

Plaza Toconao

This central square features a distinct bell tower constructed in 1750 from local volcanic liparita stone. It stands adjacent to the historic San Lucas Church.

Monumento Natural Islotes de Puñihuil

A protected natural monument consisting of three islets where Humboldt and Magellanic penguins nest side-by-side. It is one of the few locations globally where both species share a breeding ground.
