Discover the Buddhist heritage of Hida through these six historic temples. This selection includes Soto Zen and Jodo Shinshu sites, many of which serve as stops on the Hida 33 Kannon and Chubu 49 Yakushi pilgrimages. Highlights include Rinsho-ji, the family temple of the Anegakoji clan, and temples like Enko-ji and Shinshu-ji, which are central to the 300-year-old San-dera Mairi tradition held every January. These sites showcase Kamakura-period statuary and traditional architecture unique to the region.
A 林昌寺
A Soto Zen temple established as the family temple for the Anegakoji clan, the historical governors of Hida Province.
B 玄昌寺
A Soto Zen temple enshrining Shaka Nyorai. It serves as the 19th station on the Hida 33 Kannon Pilgrimage route.
C Enkō Temple
A Jodo Shinshu temple known for its role in the San-dera Mairi winter pilgrimage. The grounds feature traditional wooden architecture and are wheelchair accessible.
D 慈眼寺
A Soto Zen temple that enshrines a Bato Kannon (Horse-headed Kannon) statue. It is the 14th site of the Hida 33 Kannon Pilgrimage.
E 寿楽寺
A Soto Zen temple housing a Kamakura-period Yakushi Nyorai. It is a designated stop for both the Chubu 49 Yakushi and Hida 33 Kannon pilgrimages.
F 真宗寺
A Jodo Shinshu temple famous for the annual San-dera Mairi pilgrimage held from January 9 to 16. It is located near the historic Seto River canal.
