Hokkaido's Best Hot Springs

Hokkaido's geothermal landscape offers a diverse range of bathing experiences, from Japan’s northernmost springs in Wakkanai to the island’s oldest thermal retreat at Shirane Onsen, which dates back to the 14th century. This selection includes the rare oil-rich waters of Toyotomi, coastal pools at Mizunashi-kaihin that appear only at low tide, and the iodine-concentrated baths of Bansei. 水無海浜温泉

Natural coastal pools located at the base of the active volcano Mount Esan. These baths are unique for being submerged by the Pacific Ocean during high tide, making them accessible only when the tide is low.

Japan’s northernmost hot spring resort, known for its rare 'oil onsen' containing petroleum. The mineral-rich water is historically used for treating skin conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.

A coastal facility on the Pacific shore featuring dark amber water. It is known for having one of the highest concentrations of iodine in the world.

知内温泉;ユートピア和楽園

Established in the 14th century, this is Hokkaido’s oldest hot spring. The facility features historic architecture and multiple spring sources with varying mineral properties.

然別峡;かんの温泉

A remote hot spring located within Daisetsuzan National Park. It features 11 different spring sources, each with distinct mineral compositions, and is known as a 'hidden' spring (hitoh).

和琴温泉

An open-air bath located on the Wakoto Peninsula of Lake Kussharo. The site offers views of the lake and is heated by natural geothermal activity from the volcanic soil.
