Forts and Castles of Königsberg

Königsberg’s 19th-century defensive system, known as the "Night Cabal," comprises a ring of 12 main and 3 auxiliary forts surrounding the city. These brick structures showcase Prussian military engineering, featuring intricate moats, vaulted corridors, and massive earthen ramparts. Today, they serve as museums, memorials, and architectural monuments, providing a detailed look into 19th-century fortification techniques and the heavy combat that occurred during the 1945 siege.

Fort No 11 Denhof

One of the best-preserved forts in the defensive ring. It operates as a private museum where visitors can see original 19th-century metalwork, drainage systems, and heavy armored shutters that remain functional.

Fort No 5 Korol Fridrih-Vilgelm III

A memorial complex and branch of the Museum of History and Art. This site saw intense fighting in 1945 and now features outdoor displays of Soviet military equipment and artillery.

Fort No 1 Stajn

Built between 1875 and 1879, this large hexagonal fort is named after Prussian statesman Baron vom Stein. It retains its original moat and massive brick vaulted ceilings.

Grolman Bastion

Part of the inner defensive ring, this mid-19th-century bastion features a horseshoe-shaped layout. It was designed by General Ernst Ludwig von Aster to protect the city's northeastern perimeter.

Kronprinz Defensive Barracks

A massive neo-Gothic defensive barracks built in the mid-19th century. Its thick brick walls and corner towers were designed to withstand heavy artillery fire while housing an entire garrison.

Wrangel tower

A circular artillery tower completed in 1859. Named after Field Marshal Friedrich von Wrangel, it features 12-meter-thick walls and was part of the city's second defensive enclosure.

Reduit of the Astromomical Bastion

Constructed between 1855 and 1860, this bastion earned its name from its proximity to the former Königsberg Observatory. The reduit remains a prominent example of Prussian brick fortification.

Lunet Betthershofen

A minor defensive outpost located near the Wrangel Tower, once serving as an auxiliary fortification to support the main bastions of the inner ring.

Fort No 6 Koroleva Luiza

Named after Queen Louise, this 19th-century fort was part of the internal defensive ring. It remains one of the smaller, yet strategically positioned, structures in the western sector.

A smaller intermediate fort named after Prussian General Albert von Barnekow. It was built to bridge the gap between main forts in the northeastern defensive line.

An auxiliary intermediate fort named after the von Gröben family. It served as a support position within the eastern section of the defensive perimeter.

Ravelin Fridland

A 19th-century triangular fortification located near the Friedland Gate. It was designed to protect the curtain wall and provide crossfire against advancing troops.

Fort No 8 - Korol Fridrih I

Named after King Frederick I, this fort is located in the southern sector. Although partially in ruins, it showcases the classic hexagonal design and moat system of the Königsberg belt.

Fort No 3 Korol Fridrih-Vilgelm I

The largest fort in the defensive ring, named after King Frederick William I. This massive structure features deep dry moats and an extensive network of underground tunnels.

Fort No 12 Ojlenburg

Named after the Eulenburg family, this fort guarded the southeastern approaches to the city. It retains much of its original brickwork and earthen ramparts.
