Lamu County Essentials

Lamu County preserves the architectural and cultural heritage of the Swahili coast. This collection features the UNESCO-listed Lamu Old Town, home to the 19th-century Lamu Fort and the Riyadha Mosque, a major center for Islamic scholarship. Beyond the town, the 15th-century Takwa ruins on Manda Island and the ancient settlement of Pate offer insights into the region's medieval trading history. Lamu Fort

Constructed between 1813 and 1821 by the Sultan of Pate, this massive square structure served as a defensive garrison and a prison. It now houses a museum, a library, and an environmental gallery.

Lamu Museum

Housed in a grand Swahili building on the waterfront, this museum displays ethnographic material including traditional furniture, jewelry, and ceremonial horns known as siwa, documenting the maritime history of the archipelago.

Lamu Market

A central commercial hub in the Old Town where vendors sell fresh fish from the Indian Ocean, tropical fruits, vegetables, and traditional Swahili spices.

Takwa ruins

The remains of a 15th-century Swahili trading outpost on Manda Island. Notable features include a pillar tomb and the Great Mosque, illustrating architectural styles from before its 17th-century abandonment.

Riyadha mosque

Established in the late 19th century, this mosque is a prestigious center for Islamic learning in East Africa and the focal point of the annual Maulidi festival.

Pate

An ancient settlement on Pate Island that functioned as a powerful Swahili city-state between the 13th and 19th centuries, featuring archaeological remains of stone houses and mosques.
