Lakes and Reservoirs

The Liptov region features a striking contrast between massive engineering projects and delicate alpine ecosystems. The Liptovská Mara and Bešeňová reservoirs manage the Váh river's flow, while the Čierny Váh pumped-storage plant represents a significant technical monument with its upper reservoir at 1,160 meters. In the higher elevations of the Western Tatras, glacial activity formed numerous tarns, including the Roháčske and Jamnícke lakes. The area also preserves unique wetlands like the Rojkovské rašelinisko travertine peat bog.

Liptovská Mara is a water reservoir created in the second half of the 20th century to prevent floods.

Roháčské Glacial Lakes

If you ever head to Roháče, you sure shouldn't miss the glacial lakes of the same name.

Vodná nádrž Bešeňová

A balancing reservoir on the Váh river located directly below Liptovská Mara, used to regulate water flow for the local hydroelectric system.

Jamnické plesá

A pair of glacial lakes, Nižné and Vyšné Jamnícke pleso, located in the upper part of the Jamnícka Valley in the Western Tatras.

Plačlivé pliesko

The largest tarn in the Roháčsky kotol, situated in the Jamnícka Valley at an altitude of 1,770 meters.

Nižné Jamnícke pleso

The lower and larger of the two Jamnícke glacial lakes, located at an elevation of 1,732 meters in the Western Tatras.

Vyšné Jamnícke pleso

The upper glacial lake in the Jamnícka Valley, situated at an altitude of 1,839 meters.

PVE Čierny Váh, horná nádrž

The upper reservoir of Slovakia's most powerful pumped-storage power plant, situated on the Vyšné Heľbičky plateau at 1,160 meters with views of the High Tatras.

PVE Čierny Váh, dolná nádrž

The lower reservoir of the Čierny Váh pumped-storage plant, located on the river of the same name at an altitude of 733 meters.

Rojkovské rašelinisko

A rare travertine peat bog featuring mineral springs and specialized wetland vegetation, located near the village of Rojkov.

Pliesko pod Žiarskym sedlom

A small glacial tarn located in the Western Tatras, positioned just below the Žiarske saddle.
