Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with mild weather. Summers are hot and dry. Winters are cold, and the city is known for thick fog.

The Snail Gathering (Aplec del Caragol) in May is a huge food festival. The main city festival (Festa Major) is also in May.

• La Seu Vella is a cathedral on a hill above the city, a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles inside fortress walls. It has a Gothic cloister and views over the plain.

• By air: Lleida-Alguaire airport (ILD) has very few flights. Barcelona airport (about 160 km) and Zaragoza airport are the main alternatives.
• By train: High-speed trains from Barcelona and Zaragoza take about an hour. Book on Renfe.
• By bus: Coaches run to Barcelona, Andorra, the Pyrenees and many towns.

• On foot: The old town is compact. The climb to the Seu Vella is steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
• Cycling: The city is flat, with bike lanes and a riverside path.
• Public transport: City buses cover the area, and there is a lift to the hill.

• Is a car worth it?: Not for the city. A car helps for the Pyrenees and the countryside.
• Parking: Use an underground car park near the center.
• Restrictions: Parts of the old town are pedestrian only.

Lleida is known for its snails (caragols a la llauna), cooked on a metal tray with herbs and served with allioli. Local fruit, especially pears and peaches, and olive oil from the Garrigues area are also well known.

Roast meat, escalivada (grilled vegetables) and cargols are often on the menu in the old town.

Lleida is a safe city. Summer heat is strong, and winter fog can slow road traffic, so allow extra time if you drive.

Lleida was an Iberian and Roman town called Ilerda, where Julius Caesar won a battle in 49 BC. It was ruled by the Moors until the Christian conquest in 1149.

The Seu Vella was built from the 13th century. The cathedral was used as a barracks from the 18th century, and it was only returned to religious and cultural use in the 20th century.
