Port Arthur Essentials

Port Arthur is a town and former convict settlement on the Tasman Peninsula, in Tasmania, Australia.

Penitentiary

Originally constructed as a flour mill and granary in 1843, this four-story structure was converted into a dormitory and cell block in 1857. At its peak, it housed up to 480 convicts in both separate cells and communal wards.

Convict Church

Built by convict labor between 1836 and 1837, this decorative Gothic-style ruin was designed to accommodate up to 1,100 worshippers. The building was gutted by a bushfire in 1884, leaving only its sandstone walls and steeple.

Constructed in 1868 to house the colony's psychiatric patients, this building now functions as a museum and visitor gallery. It features interactive exhibits on the site's history and is fully wheelchair accessible.
