Rožnov pod Radhoštěm has warm summers and cold, often snowy winters, typical for the Beskydy foothills. July and August are the best months for hiking Radhošť and exploring the open-air museum outdoors; snow covers the surrounding peaks from around November to March, drawing skiers and sledders to nearby Pustevny.

The town's biggest annual draw is the open-air museum's Christmas market, when the wooden streets of Wallachian Open-Air Museum fill with craft stalls, carol singers, and mulled wine in early December — worth timing a winter visit around.

Wallachian Open-Air Museum is the heart of a visit here: the largest open-air museum of folk architecture in the Czech Republic, founded in 1925, with reconstructed wooden farmsteads, a working mill, and craftspeople demonstrating traditional trades across three separate areas.

Jurkovičova rozhledna is a 31-metre wooden lookout tower on the hill above the museum, built to a design Dušan Jurkovič drew up in 1896 but which was not completed until 2012. Climb it for views over the town and the Radhošť ridge.

Radhošť is the region's best-known mountain, a 1,129-metre peak reached by a marked trail from town. Bronze statues of Saints Cyril and Methodius, unveiled in 1931, stand at the summit alongside a granite statue of the Slavic god Radegast, whom local legend says the two missionary saints displaced when they preached here in the 9th century.

sv. Cyril a Metoděj (kaple) sits just below the statues; built in 1898, it is a quiet stop after the crowds around the summit viewpoint.

Pustevny is a mountain saddle on the ridge beyond Radhošť, worth the extra walk for its cluster of ornate wooden chalets designed by Jurkovič, including Libušín and Maměnka — built on a site where hermits lived until 1874.

• Walk the ridge from Radhošť to Pustevny and stop at one of the wooden mountain chalets for a plate of halušky before heading back down.
• Watch a blacksmith, potter, or wood-carver at work in the open-air museum's workshops — craftspeople demonstrate traditional Wallachian trades on many summer days.
• Join the crowds for the candlelit Christmas market in the museum's wooden streets each December, with carol singers and mulled wine stalls.
• In winter, take a beginner run or a toboggan down the slopes above Pustevny, reached by chairlift from the ridge.

Rožnov sits close to several worthwhile day trips, from small Wallachian towns to a very different big city.

• Frenštát pod Radhoštěm — about 15 minutes by car or bus; a neighboring Wallachian town with its own arcaded square, close to the valley station of the chairlift up to Pustevny.
• Valašské Meziříčí — about 20 minutes by car or train; a historic crossroads town with the Kinský family's chateau and a well-preserved old square.
• Štramberk — about 45 minutes by car; a hilltop town famous for its medieval Trúba tower and for štramberské uši, spiced gingerbread pastries shaped like ears.
• Ostrava — about an hour by car or train; the Czech Republic's third-largest city, worth it for the converted 19th-century ironworks of the Lower Vítkovice industrial site.

The mountains around Rožnov reach beyond the town's own borders. Beskydy Protected Landscape Area covers the wider Beskydy range in more depth, including trails beyond Radhošť.

Vsetín is the Wallachian district's administrative center, a short train ride south. Zlín is the capital of Zlínský kraj, about an hour away and known for its modernist Baťa-era architecture.

• By air: the nearest airport with scheduled passenger service is Leoš Janáček Ostrava Airport (OSR), about 55 km / 50 minutes by car. There is no direct public transit link, so most travelers rent a car or take a taxi. Prague's Václav Havel Airport, about 300 km away, has far more international connections; onward travel by train or bus takes roughly 4–4.5 hours.
• By train: Rožnov pod Radhoštěm has its own station on a branch line. Change at Valašské Meziříčí for the main line toward Ostrava, Olomouc, and Prague. Book tickets through České dráhy, the national railway.
• By bus: regional buses run to Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, Valašské Meziříčí, and Zlín; a direct long-distance coach also connects to Prague.

• Public transit: local and regional buses link the center, the train station, the open-air museum, and nearby villages. Buy single tickets from the driver, or use IDZK, the Zlín Region's integrated transport system, for regional trips.
• Taxi: a handful of local taxi firms operate; ride-hailing app coverage is limited compared with larger Czech cities.
• On foot: the town center is compact and easy to walk — the main square, the museum, and the lookout tower are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Reaching Radhošť or Pustevny is a proper mountain hike, not a stroll.

• Car needed? Not for the town center, which is easily walkable, but a car helps for reaching Pustevny, the surrounding villages, and day trips, especially outside summer when buses run less often.
• Parking: pay-and-display lots sit near the main square and the museum's main entrance; pay at the machine shown on the signage. A larger free lot serves the museum on quieter days.

Wallachian cooking is hearty and simple. Frgál, a large sweet flatbread topped with plums, poppy seed, or curd cheese, is the region's signature bake, sold at market stalls and bakeries around town. Potato dumplings, smoked meats, and sheep's cheese also turn up on most menus, especially in the mountain chalets near Pustevny.

For a meal, head to the streets around the main square, where a handful of Wallachian-style taverns serve regional dishes, or eat at one of the traditional inns inside Wallachian Open-Air Museum itself, where the food matches the setting.

Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is a very safe town with little tourist-targeted crime. The main risk to plan for is the mountain, not the town: weather on the Radhošť ridge changes quickly, and the trail can turn icy or foggy well into spring and again from October. Wear proper hiking boots, check the forecast before setting out, and turn back if visibility drops. At the museum's busiest festival days, keep half an eye on bags and wallets, as at any crowded event.

The open-air museum that now anchors the town began in 1925, when the brothers Bohumír and Alois Jaroněk started collecting threatened timber buildings from villages across Wallachia to save them from demolition. What grew into Wallachian Open-Air Museum became one of the country's first, and eventually its largest, open-air museum of folk life.

The mountain above town carries an older story. Local legend holds that Radhošť was once a place of worship for the Slavic god Radegast, whose statue still stands near the summit; the tradition says Saints Cyril and Methodius climbed here in the 9th century to preach Christianity and displace the old cult. That legend is why bronze statues of the two missionary saints, unveiled in 1931, stand at the top today, close to sv. Cyril a Metoděj (kaple), built in 1898.
