Religious Heritage of Naxxar

Naxxar’s religious landscape is centered around the 17th-century Parish Church of Our Lady of Victory and a network of historic wayside chapels. The collection features the unique cave sanctuary of St. Paul the Hermit hidden in Wied il-Għasel and the San Pawl tat-Targa chapel, positioned near ancient cart ruts and the Victoria Lines. These sites demonstrate traditional Maltese Baroque architecture and local stone craftsmanship, marking centuries of communal devotion in one of Malta's oldest parishes.

Our Lady of Victory

A 17th-century Baroque parish church designed by architect Tumas Dingli. It features a choir added in 1691 and houses a revered wooden statue of the Virgin Mary brought from Rome in 1878.

Il Kapella ta San Pawl Eremita

A 17th-century sanctuary built directly into a natural cave within the Wied il-Għasel valley. Local tradition identifies this secluded site as the former dwelling of a hermit.

San Pawl tat Targa Chapel

Rebuilt in 1696, this chapel stands on a site where St. Paul is traditionally said to have preached. It is located adjacent to the Victoria Lines and ancient Roman cart ruts.

Kappella ta' Santa Margherita

A historic chapel dating back to the 16th century, representing the simple, traditional architecture of rural Maltese places of worship.
