Wilderness & Alpine Huts

This collection features essential backcountry shelters and campsites across Tongariro National Park and the Kaimanawa Forest Park. It includes modern alpine huts on the Tongariro Northern Circuit and Round the Mountain Track, alongside historic structures like the Old Waihohonu Hut, built in 1904. These locations provide strategic access to the volcanic landscapes of Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe, offering amenities ranging from basic day shelters and riverside campsites to serviced huts with heating and cooking facilities.

Waihohonu Hut

Modern serviced hut on the Tongariro Northern Circuit and Round the Mountain Track. Features solar lighting, wood heating, and gas cookers during the Great Walk season.

Oturere Hut

Located on the eastern edge of the Tongariro Northern Circuit, positioned among jagged lava formations with views of Mount Ngauruhoe.

Rangipo Hut

The only hut on the eastern side of the Round the Mountain Track, situated on the edge of the Rangipo Desert's volcanic plateau.

Old Waihohonu Hut

Historic wooden structure built in 1904, recognized as the oldest mountain hut in New Zealand. It now serves as a museum and historic site.

Ketetahi Shelter

Former overnight hut on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, converted to a day shelter after sustaining damage during the 2012 Te Maari eruption.

Waikoko Campsite
