Colonia's Cultural Treasures

Colonia del Sacramento's cultural landscape is anchored by its UNESCO-listed Historic Quarter, where 17th-century Portuguese and Spanish colonial architecture remains preserved. This collection features specialized museums housed in period buildings, covering subjects from decorative tiles and 18th-century domestic life to maritime shipwrecks in the Río de la Plata. The list also highlights regional paleontology, restored railway heritage, and open-air sculpture installations found within the department.

Historic Quarter of the City of Colonia del Sacramento

A UNESCO World Heritage site founded by the Portuguese in 1680. The district features narrow cobblestone streets and a fusion of Portuguese and Spanish colonial architecture, including the lighthouse and ruins of the Convent of San Francisco.

Tile Museum

An unusual museum housed in an old home. Both French and Spanish old tiles can be seen here.

Nacarello House Museum

An 18th century Portuguese mansion and a great showcase of Colonial-style architecture, both from the inside and the outside.

Housed in an 18th-century stone residence, this museum exhibits Portuguese military uniforms, historical maps, furniture, and weapons from the colonial period.

There is a lot to see here. The railway museum is the main draw, but there are also displays on the Mihanovic complex and more.

A collection of restored vintage steam locomotives and railway wagons housed in a recreated train station, detailing the history of the Uruguayan rail system.

Museo Paleontologico Armando Calcaterra

Features a collection of regional fossils and prehistoric remains, including glyptodont shells and giant ground sloth skeletons found in the Colonia area.
