Zagori's Sacred Sites

Zagori’s religious landscape is defined by stone-built monasteries and churches dating from the 11th to the 19th centuries. These structures, often perched on gorge rims or tucked into river valleys, feature unique Epirotic architecture characterized by slate roofs and intricate wood-carved iconostases. Notable sites include the 15th-century Agia Paraskevi overlooking the Vikos Gorge and the remote Panagia Spiliotissa. Many house rare post-Byzantine frescoes that reflect the region's historical wealth and spiritual significance.
