Mount Cook Viewpoints & Camps

This collection features essential infrastructure within Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, ranging from accessible valley trails to high-altitude mountaineering huts. It includes the White Horse Hill campground, the primary base for hikers, and several Department of Conservation and New Zealand Alpine Club shelters like Mueller Hut and Empress Hut. These sites provide critical access to views of the Hooker and Tasman Glaciers, as well as the Southern Alps' most prominent peaks.

Hooker Valley Track

A 10-kilometer return trail crossing three suspension bridges, leading to a glacial lake with views of Aoraki / Mount Cook.

White Horse Hill Camping Area

A Department of Conservation campground with 60 non-powered sites and a communal kitchen shelter. It serves as the trailhead for the Hooker Valley and Kea Point tracks.

A short uphill walk from the car park overlooking New Zealand's longest glacier and its terminal lake, which often contains floating icebergs.

Mueller Lake Lookout

Mueller Hut

A high-altitude hut at 1,800 meters featuring 28 bunks. It provides views of Mount Sefton and the Mueller Glacier ice cliffs.

Kea Point

An easy walking track ending at a viewing platform that overlooks the Mueller Glacier moraine wall and Mount Sefton.

Rad's Fotopoint

A scenic vantage point located along the steep ascent toward Mueller Hut, frequently used for photography of the valley below.

Centennial Hut

A New Zealand Alpine Club mountaineering hut located at 2,320 meters on the Davis Snowfield.

Barron Saddle Hut

An 8-bunk hut situated at 2,000 meters on the Main Divide, serving as a base for trans-alpine crossings.

Copland Shelter

A small emergency shelter located near the Copland Pass, used by mountaineers crossing the Southern Alps.

Empress Hut

A high-altitude mountaineering hut at the head of the Hooker Glacier, used as a base for climbing the West Face of Aoraki / Mount Cook.

Sefton Bivvy

The oldest hut in the national park, built in 1917. This 4-bunk bivouac is located on a ridge beneath the ice cliffs of Mount Sefton.
