Serengeti's Iconic Kopjes

These ancient granite formations, known as kopjes, rise abruptly from the Serengeti's flat grasslands to create unique micro-ecosystems. Formed over millions of years through erosion, these weathered outcrops provide essential shade, seasonal water catchments, and elevated vantage points for predators like lions, leopards, and cheetahs. The list features prominent clusters including the Sametu and Maasai Kopjes, which serve as territorial markers and breeding grounds for resident prides and various bird species across the central and eastern plains.
