Bulgan Essentials

Bulgan province features a landscape of extinct volcanic craters, granite massifs, and significant archaeological remains. This collection highlights the symmetrical Uran-Togoo volcano, the 17th-century Erdiin Khambiin Khiid monastery, and the medieval Khitan ruins of Khar Bukhiin Balgas and Chintolgoi-Balgas. These sites represent the region’s geological diversity and its history as a strategic center for the Liao Dynasty and later Buddhist traditions.

Uran-Togoo

Extinct volcano part of the Uran-Togoo Tulga Uul Natural Monument. The crater is approximately 500 meters wide and 50 meters deep, containing a small lake and dense vegetation.

Erdiin Khambiin Khiid

Buddhist monastery complex established in the 17th century by Zanabazar. Located at the base of the Khögno Khan Mountains, it features restored temples and ruins of the original structures.

Khar Bukhiin Balgas

Archaeological site containing the ruins of a 10th-century Khitan city. The site features extensive mud-brick fortifications and stone buildings from a later 17th-century settlement.

Khögön Khan

Granite mountain range rising from the semi-desert steppe. The area contains unique rock formations, birch forests, and historical religious sites including the Ovgon and Erdiin Khamba monasteries.

Hargal Nuur

Freshwater lake located in the northern reaches of the province.
