Lakes and Waterfalls

This collection highlights the diverse water features of the Eyjafjörður region in Northern Iceland. It includes Mígandifoss, a waterfall that drops from the Tröllaskagi cliffs directly into the ocean, and Leyningsfoss in the Glerárdalur valley. The list also features various highland lakes and ponds, such as the folklore-rich Nykurtjörn and the Varðgjárvötn lakes, which are situated along established hiking routes near Akureyri and Dalvík.

Mígandifoss

Waterfall on the Tröllaskagi peninsula that drops approximately 100 meters directly into the Eyjafjörður fjord. It is visible from Route 82 between Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður.

Leyningsfoss

Waterfall located in the Glerárdalur valley, south of Akureyri. It is part of the Glerá river system and accessible via local hiking trails.

Nykurtjörn

Mountain lake situated in the Tröllaskagi highlands at an elevation of approximately 460 meters. According to local folklore, it was once home to a mythical water horse.

Veigastaðavatn

Small lake located on the eastern shore of Eyjafjörður, near the settlement of Veigastaðir.

Hvalvatn

Freshwater lake located in the northern part of the Tröllaskagi peninsula, inland from the village of Dalvík.

Varðgjárvötn

Group of small lakes situated on the ridge above the Varðgjá forest, offering views over Akureyri and the fjord.

Hundatjörn

Small pond located within the Kjarnaskógur recreational area south of Akureyri.

Finnastaðatjörn

Small pond located near the farm Finnastaðir on the western side of Eyjafjörður.
