Alpine Huts and Shelters
This collection features high-altitude refuges across East Tyrol’s prominent mountain ranges, including the Venediger, Glockner, and Schober Groups, as well as the Carnic Alps. Managed by the Austrian and German Alpine Clubs or private owners, these huts provide essential support for multi-day treks like the Eagle Walk and the Carnic High Trail. Facilities range from basic shelters to huts offering regional cuisine, hot showers, and Wi-Fi, often situated at elevations between 2,000 and 3,454 meters.
A Johannishütte
A German Alpine Club hut in the Venediger Group, serving as a primary base for ascents of the Großvenediger. It features modern amenities including showers and Wi-Fi.
B Clarahütte
Located in the Umbal Valley within Hohe Tauern National Park, this refuge sits near the Umbal Falls and offers regional cuisine and a beer garden.
C Essener-Rostocker Hütte
Situated at the head of the Maurertal in the Venediger Group, this hut provides a base for glacier tours and features Wi-Fi and hot showers.
D Barmer Hütte
A high-altitude refuge at 2,610 meters in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park, managed by the DAV Wuppertal section and offering traditional restaurant service.
E Hochsteinhütte
Located at 2,023 meters, this ÖAV shelter offers views over Lienz and features a restaurant with outdoor seating and regional cuisine.
F Erzherzog-Johann-Hütte
Also known as Adlersruhe, this is the highest mountain hut in Austria at 3,454 meters. It serves as the final staging point for the Großglockner summit.
G Sillianer Hütte
Positioned on the Carnic Main Ridge at 2,447 meters, this hut is a key stop on the Carnic High Trail and features a beer garden.
H Eisseehütte
A privately owned shelter in the Venediger Group, located near the Eissee alpine lake at an elevation of 2,521 meters.
I Sajathütte
Rebuilt in 2001, this private hut is known for its unique castle-like stone architecture and its location at 2,575 meters in the Venediger Group.
J Alte Prager Hütte
A historic former alpine hut that has been out of operation since 2009. It remains a notable landmark in the Venediger Group.
K Salmhütte
Located at 2,644 meters in the Glockner Group, this historic site was the base for the first successful ascent of the Großglockner in 1800.
L Stüdlhütte
A modern, eco-friendly hut at 2,802 meters. It is the primary base for climbing the Großglockner via the Stüdlgrat ridge.
M Sudetendeutsche Hütte
A Category I alpine refuge in the Granatspitz Group, situated at 2,650 meters next to a small alpine lake.
N Obstansersee-Hütte
Located at 2,304 meters on the Carnic High Trail, this hut sits directly on the Obstanser See and offers boat rentals.
O Filmoor
A small, high-altitude shelter on the Carnic Main Ridge, serving hikers on the long-distance trail between Sillian and Obertilliach.
P Porzehütte
An Austrian Alpine Club refuge in the Carnic Alps, providing a base for exploring the Porze peak and surrounding limestone massifs.
Q Bonn-Matreier-Hütte
A joint DAV and ÖAV hut located at 2,631 meters, offering a vantage point over the Virgen Valley and the surrounding 3,000-meter peaks.
R Badener Hütte
A high-alpine shelter at 2,608 meters in the Venediger Group, providing access to the Frosnitzkees glacier.
Nilljochhütte
A private hut above the Virgen Valley featuring a beer garden and regional cuisine, accessible via a shorter hike than many high-alpine shelters.
Hochschoberhütte
A Category I refuge in the Schober Group, situated at 2,322 meters near the Gartlsee lake and the Hochschober peak.
