Llŷn Peninsula Essentials

The Llŷn Peninsula features a diverse collection of historical and natural landmarks. This selection includes the 13th-century Criccieth Castle, perched on a rocky headland, and the Iron Age hillfort of Castell Odo. Coastal highlights range from the rare "singing" sands of Porth Oer to the secluded Porth Iago cove. The region's heritage is further reflected in the 17th-century manor house Plas yn Rhiw and the 12th-century St Hywyn’s Church, a historic resting point for pilgrims traveling to Bardsey Island.

Criccieth Castle

A 13th-century native Welsh castle built by Llywelyn the Great and later refortified by Edward I. It sits on a headland overlooking Tremadog Bay.

Ty Coch Inn

A historic pub situated directly on the beach at Porthdinllaen. Built in 1823 as a vicarage, it was converted into an inn in 1842 to serve the local shipbuilding community.

Whistling Sands

A National Trust beach known for its "whistling" sands, a sound created by the friction of uniquely shaped quartz grains when walked upon.

St Hywyn
