Mariehamn served as the home port for the world’s last great fleet of commercial sailing ships under shipowner Gustaf Erikson. This collection explores that legacy through the Pommern, a remarkably preserved four-masted barque, and the Åland Maritime Museum’s extensive collection of figureheads and nautical instruments. The Sjökvarteret (Maritime Quarter) provides a living history of traditional wooden boatbuilding, while smaller specialized museums document the evolution of marine engines and early 20th-century merchant life in the archipelago.
