Mondsee is a lake town on the Salzkammergut's northern edge, east of Salzburg. The town sits on a warm lake surrounded by gentle hills. The yellow baroque church at its centre was used as the wedding location in the film The Sound of Music.

The town is small and pretty, with colourful houses, cafes and a lakeside path. It suits swimming, sailing and easy day trips.

June to September is best for swimming, boating and cafe terraces. May and October are quieter. Winters are cold and gentle, with fog and some snow. The Christmas market is small and charming.

Mondsee is very safe. Watch for sudden storms on the lake. The via ferrata needs equipment and experience. Tap water is clean and safe to drink. The emergency number is 112.

História

A Benedictine abbey was founded here in 748, and it shaped the town for a thousand years. The lake was home to prehistoric lake dwellers, whose remains are part of a World Heritage listing. The abbey was closed in 1791, and the town developed as a lake resort.
