Natural Landscapes

Mount Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an autonomous monastic state in Northern Greece. Beyond its 20 monasteries, the peninsula features a rugged terrain dominated by the 2,033-meter marble peak of Mount Athos. The landscape includes dense chestnut and oak forests, secluded waterfalls like Grabaniste and Karyon, and sacred ascetic sites such as the cave of Saint Athanasios. These natural features have historically provided the isolation and resources essential for the monastic communities established here since the 10th century.

Athos

The limestone summit of the Holy Mountain reaches 2,033 meters. It features the small Chapel of the Transfiguration at the peak and offers views across the Aegean Sea to the Sporades and Thasos.

Katarraktes Grabaniste

A secluded waterfall located on the eastern slopes of the peninsula, accessible via hiking trails near the Great Lavra monastery.

Katarraktes Karyon

A seasonal waterfall situated near the administrative center of Karyes, surrounded by dense vegetation and traditional monastic paths.

Klosterblick

A panoramic viewpoint located near the border of the monastic state, offering a perspective of the monasteries along the western coastline of the Athos peninsula.

Spelaio Ag. Athanasiou

The ascetic retreat of Saint Athanasios the Athonite, founder of the Great Lavra in 963 AD. This seaside cave remains a significant site for Orthodox pilgrims.
