Shimoda Essentials

Shimoda marks the site where Commodore Perry's Black Ships arrived in 1854, ending Japan's era of isolation. This coastal town features Ryosenji Temple, where the Treaty of Shimoda was signed, and museums dedicated to this pivotal diplomatic history. Natural landmarks include the heart-shaped Ryugukutsu sea cave and Tsumekizaki’s volcanic rock formations.
