Religious Sites in Visegrád

Visegrád’s religious landscape spans over a millennium, from the foundations of Árpád-era ruins to Baroque parish churches. This collection includes the Royal Palace's Gothic chapel, the 18th-century Calvary path, and secluded forest shrines. Many sites, like the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, house artifacts salvaged from Buda Castle, while others, such as the plague-commemorating Mary Chapel, reflect the town's local history and resilience.

Szent Kereszt felmagasztalása templom

Late Baroque church built between 1773 and 1782. It houses a significant 18th-century high altar originally located in the Sigismund Chapel of the Buda Castle.

Palotakápolna

Restored Gothic ruins of the private chapel within the Royal Palace of Visegrád. The site illustrates the ecclesiastical architecture of the Hungarian royal court during the 14th and 15th centuries.

Árpád kori templomrom

Foundations and ruins of a church dating back to the 11th century. Located on Sibrik Hill, the site was originally built within the walls of a former Roman castrum.

Millenniumi (Fábián-Sebestyén) kápolna

An 18th-century Baroque chapel located near the Danube. It was erected by local residents as a votive offering following a plague epidemic.

Kálvária-kápolna

Baroque chapel situated at the end of a hillside Calvary path featuring stations of the cross. It offers views over the town and the Danube Bend.

Szent Mihály erdei kápolna

A secluded chapel located in the woods of the Visegrád Mountains, frequently visited by hikers on the trails near Nagy-Villám.
