Vordingborg
Vordingborg is a small harbour town on the south coast of Zealand, where the Storstrømmen strait separates it from Falster. In the Middle Ages it was one of the main seats of the Danish kings. The large ruin of their castle, with its medieval Goose Tower, still sits at the edge of the town centre.
The town itself is quiet and takes half a day to see. It works best as a calm base for south Zealand and the island of Møn, whose white chalk cliffs lie about 40 km to the east. Come for castle history, coastal walks and bridges over the sea, not for nightlife or big museums.

Kedy navštíviť
Late spring and summer are the best time to visit. Days are long, the coast is green, and all bus links to the Møn cliffs run. Autumn is cool, wet and windy. Winters are dark and cold, with short days.
The castle museum and the Goose Tower close for most of the winter, from late October to late March. In season they are usually closed on Mondays, except in school holidays.
The biggest local event is Vordingborg Festuge, a week of free concerts in the town centre in mid-July. Check the dates before you go.
Hlavné pamiatky
Vordingborg Slotsruin is the reason most people come. King Valdemar the Great founded the castle in the 12th century, and by the late 1300s its ring wall ran for about 800 m. In 1241 Valdemar the Victorious issued the Code of Jutland here, one of the most important medieval Danish laws. The grounds are free to walk around.
The Goose Tower is the only tower of the castle that still stands, and it is the symbol of the town. Valdemar Atterdag built it in the 14th century. The golden goose on top was added in 1871. In 1808 the tower became the first protected historic monument in Denmark. You can climb it for a wide view over the strait.
Danmarks Borgcenter is the museum on the castle grounds. It opened in 2014 and covers castles, kings and power in medieval Denmark. Most of the exhibition is underground, so it does not spoil the ruin. A phone audio guide leads you around the site.
Vor Frue Kirke is the town's Gothic brick church, built mainly in the 1400s. Inside are medieval wall paintings and a carved baroque altarpiece, completed in 1641.
Farø Bridges carry the motorway from Zealand to Falster by way of the small island of Farø. They are about 8 km south-east of town, and the views of the strait are best from the car or from Farø itself.
Knudshoved Odde is a protected peninsula about 15 km long, just west of town. Its beach ridges, grassland and woods are good for a long walk. The walk to the far tip is long and needs good boots, and high tide can block the path.
Day trip to Møn
The island of Møn is the main day trip from Vordingborg, so plan a full day. The whole island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Its chalk cliffs on the east coast, about 40 km from Vordingborg in a straight line, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025.
- GeoCenter Møns Klint is a geology and natural history museum at the top of the cliffs. The cliffs are about 6 km long and reach 128 m. Long wooden stairs lead down to the beach.
- Liselund is a romantic landscape park from the 1790s at the northern end of the cliffs, with a small summer palace and garden houses.
- Grønsalen in the south-west of the island is the largest long barrow in Denmark, about 100 m long.
