Altyn-Emel National Park Essentials

Kazakhstan’s Altyn-Emel National Park preserves 4,600 square kilometers of unique geological and historical sites. The park features the 150-meter Singing Barkhan, a sand dune that emits low-frequency sounds, and the multicolored Cenozoic sedimentary layers of the Aktau Mountains. Significant archaeological sites include the Besshatyr complex, containing 31 Scythian burial mounds from the Iron Age, and the Taigak gorge petroglyphs. The landscape is further defined by the volcanic Katutau formations and the Oshaktas stone pillars, which historically served as signaling beacons.

Singing barkhan

A 150-meter-high sand dune that emits a low-frequency vibration resembling an organ or aircraft engine in dry weather.

Aqtau Mountains

Cenozoic sedimentary mountains featuring white, red, and ochre layers. This paleontological site contains fossils of ancient rhinoceroses and crocodiles.

Rock carvings in the Taigak gorge depicting wildlife and hunting scenes, alongside 17th-century Buddhist inscriptions and symbols.

700 Year Old Willow

A massive tree in the Kosbastau oasis with a trunk circumference exceeding 9 meters. It is one of the oldest living trees in the region.

Mantra Om Mani Peme Hung

Sacred Tibetan Buddhist inscriptions carved into rock faces near the Ili River, dating to the period of Dzungar presence in the 17th century.
