Historic Castles & Forts

Skaros

Climb this rocky hill which used to be a fortress in the past and enjoy a panoramic view of Santorini and the Aegean Sea.

Akrotiri Castle

Damaged in the 1956 earthquake, this castle used to be a powerful fort for the Gozzadini family until it fell to the Turks in 1617.

Frankish Castle

Built in the 1200s by the Venetian Duke Marco Sanudo, this Parikia landmark incorporates marble blocks and columns salvaged from ancient Greek temples, visible in its circular walls.

Also known as the Kastelli, this 15th-century Venetian fortification sits at the entrance of Naousa’s harbor. Its circular watchtower remains partially submerged, originally built to protect the port from pirate raids.

Castle of Antiparos

A 15th-century fortified settlement built around a central courtyard. The houses themselves formed the defensive outer wall, with a central tower serving as the residence of the local governor.

Pyrgos Venetian Castle

One of the five fortified "kastelia" of Santorini, this medieval stronghold sits at the highest point of Pyrgos village. It features narrow vaulted alleys and churches built directly into the defensive perimeter.
