Kangaroo Island’s diverse wetland systems, including Murray, Duck, and Snake Lagoons, provide critical habitats for native bird species and local wildlife. These ecosystems range from the expansive freshwater Murray Lagoon in Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park to the sheltered Duck Lagoon near Cygnet River. Visitors can observe black swans, ducks, and migratory waders while exploring a network of walking trails that traverse coastal scrub, ancient sand dunes, and riverine environments.

Kangaroo Island

Kangaroo Island, also known as Karta Pintingga, is Australia's third-largest island, after Tasmania and Melville Island.

Murray Lagoon

The largest lagoon on Kangaroo Island, located within Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park. It serves as a significant breeding ground for swans, ducks, and other waterbirds. Several marked walking trails, including the Bald Hill hike, offer views of the expansive wetland system.

Duck Lagoon

A freshwater lagoon located near the Cygnet River. This site features a high concentration of birdlife, including honeyeaters and waterbirds, and includes a bird hide and picnic facilities. It is a key location for observing the island's inland ecosystem.

Snake Lagoon

Situated within Flinders Chase National Park, this lagoon marks the start of a trail leading to the mouth of the Rocky River. The area is characterized by rugged limestone cliffs, sugar gum forests, and views of the Southern Ocean coastline.

Discovery Lagoon

A seasonal wetland located near Emu Bay. The area provides a habitat for native bird species and is adjacent to local scrubland and northern coastline access points.
