Historic Churches of Lazio

Lazio’s spiritual landscape is defined by its ancient abbeys and ornate Roman basilicas. This collection includes the hilltop Montecassino Abbey, the birthplace of the Benedictine Order, and the medieval frescoes of Anagni Cathedral. In Rome, explore Borromini’s Baroque genius at Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza and San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, or witness the layered history of the Basilica of St. Clement, which sits atop Roman ruins. From the Cistercian simplicity of Fossanova to the artistic masterpieces of Caravaggio in Saint Louis the French, these sites represent centuries of religious and architectural evolution.
