Religious Heritage

Machico holds a unique place in Madeira’s history as the site of the island's first mass in 1419. This collection features the 15th-century Igreja Matriz with its Manueline architecture and the Capela dos Milagres, rebuilt after the 1803 floods. Visitors can also explore the 16th-century Capela de São Roque, known for its historic azulejo tiles, and other sacred sites that illustrate the evolution of religious life in this coastal town from the Age of Discovery to the present day.

Capela dos Milagres

Built on the site where the first mass in Madeira was celebrated in 1419. The current structure dates to 1815, following the destruction of the original 15th-century chapel by a flood.

Igreja Matriz de Machico

Constructed in the late 15th century, this parish church features Manueline architectural elements, including a marble portal donated by King Manuel I and a collection of 16th-century paintings.

Nossa Senhora da Conceição

A 15th-century church dedicated to the city's patron saint, featuring a blend of Gothic and Manueline styles with significant sacred art and historic altarpieces.

Capela de São Roque

Originally built in 1489 and reconstructed in 1739, this chapel features an interior decorated with 18th-century blue and white azulejo tiles depicting the life of Saint Roch.
