Iconic Kasbahs & Forts

This collection highlights the traditional earthen architecture of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, featuring fortified villages and palatial residences along the historic caravan routes. These structures, built primarily from mud-brick and pisé, served as defensive strongholds and administrative centers for powerful regional clans. The list includes UNESCO World Heritage sites and well-preserved examples of southern Moroccan craftsmanship, characterized by geometric motifs and crenelated towers overlooking lush palm groves and arid desert landscapes.

Kasbah de Aït Ben Haddou

A UNESCO World Heritage site and iconic example of Moroccan earthen clay architecture. This fortified village consists of several dwellings and community areas surrounded by high walls, historically serving as a major stop for caravans traveling between the Sahara and Marrakech.

Kasbah of Tifoultoute

The Kasbah of Tifoultoute is a kasbah in Ouarzazate Province, Morocco located 8 kilometres west of the city of Ouarzazate.

Telouet Kasbah

Located along a former caravan route through the High Atlas, this former palatial residence of the Glaoui family features an austere exterior that contrasts with interior rooms decorated with intricate zellige tilework, carved cedar wood, and fine stucco.

Kasbah Amridil

A 17th-century fortified residence in the Skoura palm grove, known for its well-preserved defensive towers and traditional olive oil presses. The site is famously depicted on the Moroccan 50-dirham banknote.

Ksar Tamnougalt

A 16th-century fortified village in the Draa Valley that served as the historic capital of the Mezguita region. It features a labyrinth of covered passageways and mud-brick structures overlooking the surrounding palm groves.

Gara Medouar

A natural horseshoe-shaped geological formation reinforced with man-made defensive walls. Historically used as a fortress and prison, it is also known as the 'Portuguese Prison' and has served as a location for numerous international films.
