Yeni Kaledonya

Ülke · Okyanusya

New Caledonia is a group of Pacific islands governed by France. It has a special status called a sui generis collectivity, with its own local government. The main island is Grande Terre. The Loyalty Islands and the Isle of Pines lie off its coast. Noumea is the capital and the main gateway.

The territory is known for its huge coral lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008. Kanak culture is central to daily life, and you can learn about it at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre in Nouméa. The Amédée lighthouse islet is a common day trip from the capital. Hikers can visit the Blue River park, and the east coast has the rock formations near Hienghène. Beach and snorkelling time on the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands suits couples, families and independent travellers. Prices are high, and the political situation needs a check before you go (see the safety and entry sections).

Para ve ödemeler

The local currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro at about 119 XPF per euro. Costs are similar to a large developed city, and hotels, food and flights are not cheap.

  • Bring some cash for rural areas, the islands and tribal stays. Card machines are less common there.
  • Airport ATMs are available on arrival. Currency exchange offices in Nouméa may take banknotes only.

İletişim ve internet

  • Roaming is expensive. New Caledonia is not part of the EU roaming area, so a local prepaid SIM or eSIM is usually cheaper.
  • The local operator OPT-NC sells prepaid kits and an eSIM. Check the current plans and prices before you buy.

Güvenlik ve acil durumlar

Serious unrest happened in May 2024 and a night curfew stayed in place until December 2024. The official tourism board says the territory is now open to visitors with no restrictions. Government advice is more careful. Check the latest advice from your own government before you travel, and again just before you leave.

  • The UK government says tensions have fallen, but protests can start with little warning. It names the road to the airport and the RT1 road south of Nouméa as places with a higher risk of protest. It also says extra curfews could be set at short notice.
  • The US government (May 2026) lists crime as the main concern, especially outside Nouméa at night. It also says emergency services may be slow because of language barriers.
  • Protests and blockades have disrupted domestic flights and roads in 2026. The Australian government also mentions roadblocks, carjackings and strikes that can disrupt transport. Allow extra time and keep your plans flexible.
  • Rules on buying and carrying weapons, alcohol and fuel may still apply. Ask your hotel or the French High Commission website for current limits.
  • Crime is low overall. Petty theft happens, so do not leave valuables visible. Avoid isolated areas after dark.
  • Roads are the biggest risk for most visitors. See the driving section.
  • Cyclones can occur, mainly from mid-December to mid-March.
  • For a sea emergency, the South Province tourism office lists 16 as the sea rescue number.

Sağlık

  • Insurance: Travel insurance with medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended. European and UK health cards (EHIC, GHIC) are not valid here.
  • Care: Nouméa has modern hospitals and clinics. Serious cases can need transfer to Australia or France. Medical care is more limited outside the capital.
  • Water: Tap water is generally safe to drink. In remote bush lodges, especially after heavy rain, use bottled water.
  • Vaccines: The tourism board says no vaccine is required for entry. Keep routine vaccines up to date.
  • Mosquitoes: Dengue, chikungunya and Zika occur. Use repellent and cover up at dawn and dusk.
  • Sea and reef: Wear shoes on coral and shells. Some lagoon fish can carry ciguatera poisoning, so ask locally before eating reef fish you catch yourself. Avoid swimming at dusk and near river mouths. Sea snakes are present but bites are rare.
  • Sun: Use reef-friendly sunscreen and seek shade from 10 am to 3 pm.

New Caledonia is part of the French Republic but has its own entry rules. It is not the same as mainland France or the Schengen area, so do not assume that mainland rules apply. Entry conditions are set by France and the local government. Read the rules for your passport before booking.

  • French and EU citizens: The tourism board says no visa is needed. A work permit is needed if you work there.
  • Australia and New Zealand: No visa for three months in any six-month period, according to the tourism board.
  • UK: The UK government says British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days.
  • Other nationalities: Many nationalities can stay up to 90 days within 180 days without a visa. Check the official list for your passport.
  • Passport: French and EU citizens need only a valid passport. Other nationalities need a passport issued less than 10 years ago and valid for at least three months after departure, according to the tourism board. Some government sources give different validity periods, so check the strictest one.
  • Documents: Non-EU and non-French visitors may be asked for proof of money, a return or onward ticket or travel insurance, and the reason for the stay.
  • Customs: Strict biosecurity rules ban items such as cheese, cured meats and plant products without a certificate. Check health entry rules for your route with your government.

Visa and entry requirements change frequently. Verify current requirements with the official immigration authority or your country's embassy before travel.

Görgü kuralları

Kanak custom, called la coutume, is part of daily life, especially outside Nouméa and on the islands.

  • Ask permission before you enter tribal land or areas that are sacred, and before you take photos.
  • A customary gesture is a small gift, such as fabric or food, that shows respect. It is often made when you visit a tribe or stay in a tribal home.
  • Dress modestly at ceremonies. Show respect to elders.
  • Respect private property and privacy.

Resmi tatiller ve çalışma saatleri

New Caledonia has French national holidays and its own Citizenship Day on 24 September. Some residents see that day as a day of mourning. Many shops, services and offices close on public holidays. In remote areas, fuel stations can also close on Sundays and holidays.

  • By air: Since 2 March 2026, most Air Calédonie domestic flights to Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa and the Isle of Pines use La Tontouta airport. It is about 45 minutes from Nouméa. Flights take about 40 minutes. Air Océania also flies to Lifou from Magenta airport in Nouméa. Book with Air Calédonie. The change has caused opposition, and some island flights have been cancelled or closed for short periods in 2026. Book flexible fares and check flight status and the operator just before you travel.
  • By sea: The tourism board lists a high-speed ferry, Betico 2, to the Isle of Pines, Maré and Lifou. Check times before you plan.
  • By bus: The Tanéo bus network serves Greater Nouméa. A single ticket costs 500 XPF and a day pass 1,500 XPF, according to the tourism board. Regional coaches run between towns.
  • By taxi: Pre-book taxis rather than hailing them in the street. The Nouméa Central Taxi number is +687 28 35 12.
  • By car: A car is the easiest way to see Grande Terre outside the capital. See the driving section.

Araç kullanımı

  • Roads: Main roads are generally in good condition. A standard car is enough for most routes. A 4x4 is only needed on steep or rough tracks.
  • Licence: Rules depend on where your licence was issued. Ask your rental company before you travel. The UK government says UK drivers need a UK licence and a 1968 international driving permit. The Australian government says an Australian licence is valid for one year.
  • Road risk: The Australian government says road deaths are more likely here than in Australia. Some drivers may be unlicensed or drunk, and some vehicles are poorly maintained or uninsured. Do not drink and drive.
  • Incidents: Roadblocks, carjackings and stone throwing are uncommon but can happen. Follow local news and government advice.
  • Night driving: Some guides advise against driving at night in rural areas because of pedestrians and animals on the road.
  • Fuel: The tourism board says fuel prices are regulated and the same nationwide. Stations can close on Sundays and holidays, especially in remote areas. Fill up before long trips. Some limits on buying and carrying fuel may still apply, so ask locally.
