Best of Strasbourg

Strasbourg is two cities in one: a medieval river town on the Grande Île, and the grand quarter the Germans built after 1871. This walk takes in both, moving west to east through the half-timbered canals of Petite France, the Gothic cathedral, and the monumental squares and churches of the Neustadt. Eight stops, about an hour and three quarters on foot. The walk starts at the Covered Bridges in Petite France, a short walk west of Place Kléber, the city's central square.

Walk the great east-west axis that made Paris famous: from the medieval cathedral island, through the Louvre and its royal gardens, across the square where a revolution turned deadly, and up the Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe. This is the single walk that ties together the city's most unmissable sights, with a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower itself along the way. Start at Notre-Dame Cathedral on the Île de la Cité, reachable by metro to Cité or Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame.

This walk covers the essential sights of Marseille, France's oldest city and its great Mediterranean port. You begin at the hilltop basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde, reached by bus 60 from the Vieux-Port, and walk downhill to the old harbour. From there you pass the opera and the town hall on your way to the fortified harbour mouth, then climb into the old Panier quarter, passing the cathedral of La Major, and finish at the Vieille Charité. Expect about two hours on foot, mostly flat, with one steep descent at the start.
