Castles & Fortifications

Thessaly's fortifications span from ancient acropoleis to medieval Venetian strongholds. This collection features the Byzantine citadel of Trikala with its prominent clock tower and the ancient walls of Farsala. On the islands, the 14th-century Kastro of Skiathos and the Venetian ruins of Skopelos highlight the region's maritime defense history. The list also includes the fortified residential architecture of Pelion, represented by the defensive tower in the mountain village of Agios Lavrentios.

Trikala Castle

The Trikala Castle is the Byzantine-era citadel of the city of Trikala in western Thessaly, Greece.

Castle of Skopelos

Built by the Ghisi family in the 13th century on the site of the ancient acropolis of Peparithos. Only sections of the Venetian defensive walls remain today, offering views over the town and Aegean Sea.

Castle of Skiathos

Established around 1360 on a northern rocky peninsula to protect the population from pirate raids. The site contains ruins of houses, churches, and an Ottoman-era mosque, serving as the island's capital until 1829.

Castle of Farsala

Situated on the hill of Prophet Elias, this site encompasses the ancient acropolis of Pharsalus. It features significant remains of Cyclopean masonry and Hellenistic fortifications reinforced during the Byzantine era.

Tower of Agios Lavrentios

A traditional fortified stone mansion representing the local Pelion architectural style. These structures were designed with thick walls and minimal ground-floor openings to defend against bandits and pirate incursions.
