Historic Fortifications

Torri del Benaco’s defensive history spans from prehistoric rock carvings to medieval military architecture. The centerpiece is the 14th-century Scaliger Castle, which features a rare 18th-century citrus greenhouse and an ethnographic museum. Surrounding the town, several archaeological sites preserve ancient petroglyphs etched into glaciated limestone. These carvings, such as the Roccia dei Cavalieri and Roccia delle Griselle, depict figures and symbols dating from the Bronze Age through the Middle Ages, illustrating the long-standing human presence along Lake Garda.

Castello Scaligero

A 14th-century fortress built by the della Scala family. It houses an ethnographic museum documenting local fishing and olive growing traditions, and features one of the few surviving 18th-century citrus greenhouses (limonaia) on Lake Garda.

Roccia Delle Griselle

An archaeological site featuring ancient rock engravings on smooth limestone surfaces, characteristic of the Lake Garda region’s prehistoric and medieval petroglyphs.

Incisioni rupestri

Glaciated limestone slabs displaying prehistoric and medieval petroglyphs. These carvings include various symbolic shapes and figures etched into the rock by ancient inhabitants of the region.

Roccia dei Cavalieri

A significant rock engraving site featuring medieval depictions of armed knights and figures on horseback, carved into the flat limestone surfaces overlooking the lake.
