Established in 1882, this national museum is the oldest and largest archaeological institution in Cyprus. It operates under the Department of Antiquities and serves as the primary repository for the island's historical heritage. The collection consists exclusively of artifacts discovered during excavations across the island, representing the most extensive assembly of Cypriot antiquities in the world.
Exhibits are housed within fourteen display halls and are arranged in chronological order. The collection spans from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Hellenistic period, concluding with the Roman and Early Byzantine eras. Significant artifacts include pottery, jewelry, sculpture, and coins that illustrate the cultural and social evolution of the island over millennia.
The institution is open to the public and is wheelchair accessible. It highlights the progression of modern archaeology in Cyprus, reflecting the island's diverse archaeological history through its vast permanent exhibitions.
