Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) are the most pleasant seasons, with mild days for walking the old town. Summer is very hot and dry, so plan outdoor sightseeing for morning or evening. Winter is mild by day and cool at night, and the nearby mountains sometimes see snow.

Time a visit around the Nicosia Carnival, when costumed parades fill the old town streets in the ten days before Lent, usually February or March.

Selimiye Mosque started life in the 13th century as the Gothic Cathedral of St Sophia, where the kings of Cyprus were crowned. Converted into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest, its two minarets now rise above the old city's rooftops.

Büyük Han, built in 1572 as a merchants' inn, is one of the finest Ottoman buildings on the island. Its arcaded courtyard holds craft workshops and cafés around a small mosque.

The Venetian Walls still ring the old town in an unbroken star shape. Venice built them in the 1560s, but the Ottomans breached them within a decade. Walk the moat gardens to see the eleven bastions from outside.

Cyprus Museum holds the island's largest collection of antiquities, spanning from Neolithic pottery to the Roman-era statue of Aphrodite of Soloi.

Famagusta Gate, the grandest of the old city's surviving gates, now hosts exhibitions and concerts inside its vaulted stone chambers.

Ledra Street is the old town's main shopping street and, since 2008, a pedestrian crossing point into the Turkish Cypriot-administered north.

Ömeriye Mosque began as a 14th-century Augustinian church before the Ottomans converted it into a mosque dedicated to Caliph Omar.

Archbishop's Palace is not open to the public, but the Byzantine Museum, folk art museum, and national struggle museum on its grounds are.

A few things in Nicosia are worth doing, not just seeing.

• Cross the Green Line at the Ledra Street checkpoint with your passport. The walk from the Republic of Cyprus into the Turkish Cypriot-administered north takes under a minute.
• Soak in a traditional Ottoman-era hammam ritual — steam, scrub, and massage — at Hamam Omerye, a 1570s bathhouse revived as a working hammam and spa in the 2000s.
• Ride the elevator up Shacolas Museum & Observatory in the late afternoon for a 360-degree view over the old city.
• Join the costumed street parades of the Nicosia Carnival, held in the ten days before Lent.

Nicosia sits at the center of the island, within reach of mountain villages, historic towns, and — across the Green Line — the north.

• Kyrenia, roughly 40 minutes by car and across a checkpoint: a Turkish Cypriot harbor town with a Crusader-era castle above a horseshoe-shaped harbor. Bring your passport.
• Kakopetria, roughly 50 minutes by car: an old stone village in the Troodos foothills and a base for visiting two UNESCO-listed painted Byzantine churches nearby.
• Kalapanagiotis, roughly 1 hour by car: home to the Monastery of Agios Ioannis Lampadistis, one of the UNESCO World Heritage painted churches of the Troodos region.
• Famagusta, roughly 1.5 hours by car and across a checkpoint: a walled port city with a Gothic cathedral turned mosque, next to the fenced-off ghost resort of Varosha.
• Kykkos Monastery, roughly 1.5 hours by car: Cyprus's wealthiest and most revered monastery, set deep in the Troodos pine forests.

Nicosia district reaches from the plains up into the Troodos foothills, taking in several protected mountain villages worth a detour.

• Fikardou is a tiny stone village preserved almost unchanged since the 1970s, now protected as a national monument.
• Kakopetria and Kalapanagiotis sit further into the mountains and make good day trips (see Day Trips above).

• By air: Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is Cyprus's main gateway, about 50 km southeast of Nicosia; an airport bus reaches the central bus station in roughly an hour, or a taxi in about 45 minutes. Paphos International Airport (PFO), on the west coast, mainly handles European charter and budget flights and is about a two-hour drive away.
• By train: Cyprus has no passenger railway. All intercity travel is by road.
• By bus: Intercity coaches connect Nicosia's main bus station to Larnaca, Limassol, and Paphos several times a day.

• Public transit: Nicosia's urban bus network covers the city and suburbs. Buy a ticket from the driver or load a rechargeable travel card, since direct contactless bank-card payment on board is not yet standard.
• Taxi: metered taxis are easy to find outside the old town; agree the fare or confirm the meter is running before you set off.
• On foot / cycling: the old town within the walls is compact and mostly flat, easy to explore on foot. A marked path around the old moat gardens is popular with cyclists and joggers, though cycling in city traffic outside the walls is less comfortable.

• Is a car worth it? Not for the old town itself — it is compact and mostly car-free — but a car is the easiest way to reach the Troodos villages and mountain monasteries.
• Parking: multi-story car parks ring the walled city (signposted "P"); expect around €2 for the first hour. Street parking inside the walls is scarce.
• Driving side: Cyprus drives on the left, a legacy of British rule.
• Crossing to the north: driving across the Green Line needs third-party insurance valid for the north, sold at the checkpoint.

Nicosia's food leans Greek Cypriot, with meze — a long parade of small shared dishes — the standard way to eat with a group. Halloumi, grilled or fried, appears everywhere, alongside souvlaki wraps and slow-cooked kleftiko lamb.

For eating out, head to the old town's lanes around Ledra and Onasagorou streets and the restored Laiki Geitonia quarter, where tavernas cluster in restored Ottoman-era houses.

Nicosia is a safe city for tourists; violent crime against visitors is rare. The main risks are petty ones: pickpocketing in crowded shopping streets and overcharging by unlicensed taxi drivers, so agree a fare or confirm the meter is running before you set off.

Tap water is safe to drink throughout the city. The one area requiring extra caution is the UN buffer zone itself: stay on marked crossing routes and do not photograph military positions or checkpoints.

Nicosia has been the island's capital since the 10th century, when Byzantine rulers moved the seat of power inland, away from a coastline exposed to raids. The Lusignan kings who followed built Selimiye Mosque as their coronation cathedral, and the city grew wealthy on trade.

The Venetians took over in 1489 and rebuilt the city's defenses from scratch, encircling it with the star-shaped Venetian Walls that still stand today. The walls held only briefly: the Ottomans captured the city in 1570 after a seven-week siege, and Nicosia stayed under Ottoman rule for three centuries, gaining buildings like Büyük Han.

Britain administered Cyprus from 1878 until independence in 1960. Intercommunal fighting split the city in 1963, and the 1974 conflict divided it permanently along the line that still runs through the old town today.
