This mountain range was established as the first nature park in Bulgaria and the Balkan Peninsula, covering an area of approximately 278 km². The massif is defined by its characteristic dome shape and extensive plateaus, with Cherni Vrah serving as the highest point. The territory is a protected area preserving significant botanical, zoological, and geological diversity.
Unique geological formations are found throughout the landscape, most notably the stone rivers and karst regions. The area also contains the long Duchlata cave system, alongside various peat bogs, springs, and waterfalls. The terrain consists of dense forests and alpine zones.
The mountain is open for hiking, skiing, alpinism, and winter sports, supported by a network of trails and lift facilities. Access to various parts of the massif is available via bus lines. High-elevation areas are subject to unpredictable and dangerous weather conditions, which can pose risks during exploration.
