Religious Heritage in Atacama

The Atacama Region’s religious heritage reflects a blend of colonial history and local devotion. This collection features architectural landmarks ranging from 19th-century wooden structures in coastal Caldera to stone-built shrines in the interior valleys. Highlights include the Santuario de la Candelaria, the focal point of the region’s largest religious festival, and the Gruta Padre Negro, hand-carved into rock. These sites showcase traditional materials like adobe and cactus wood alongside imported European designs.

Santuario Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria

Located in Copiapó, this sanctuary hosts the region's most significant religious festival every February. The current structure dates to 1922, replacing an earlier chapel built to house a 1780 stone image of the Virgin discovered in the Salado River.

Gruta Padre Negro

A rock-hewn shrine in Caldera created by the priest Crisógono Sierra y Velásquez. The site features colorful murals and a chapel carved directly into the hillside, overlooking the Pacific coast.

Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Carmen

Located in Tierra Amarilla, this church serves as a central landmark in the Copiapó Valley. It is characterized by its traditional bell tower and its role in local agricultural and religious festivals.

Iglesia Virgen de la Merced

A rural church in the village of Domeyko. It features a simple rectangular nave and a wooden facade typical of the small mining and transit settlements in the southern Atacama desert.

Iglesia Parroquial San Pedro Apóstol

Situated in Huasco Bajo, this is one of the oldest parishes in the region, with roots dating back to colonial times. The current structure serves the oldest settlement in the Huasco Valley.

Located in the planned mining town of El Salvador, this modern parish church serves the copper mining community. Its architecture reflects the mid-20th-century industrial design of the town.

Iglesia Carrizalillo

A modest chapel in the coastal fishing and olive-growing village of Carrizalillo. The building is a central gathering point for the small community near the border with the Coquimbo Region.

Parroquia Virgen del Carmen
