Barcelonnette Essentials

Barcelonnette and the Ubaye Valley are defined by a unique blend of Alpine geography and unexpected architectural history. The town features grand 'Mexican' villas like Villa Bleue and Villa Costebelle, built by residents who returned from Mexico in the 19th century. Surrounding the valley are some of Europe's highest paved mountain passes, including the Col de la Bonette and Col de la Cayolle. Military heritage is preserved at the multi-level Fort de Tournoux, while the Pont du Châtelet spans a sheer 100-meter limestone gorge.

Heritage and History

The Ubaye Valley preserves a diverse architectural timeline, from the ancient stone arches of the Pont Romain du Lauzet to the 19th-century "Mexican" villas of Barcelonnette and Jausiers. Its strategic Alpine location is marked by formidable military structures, including the multi-level Fort de Tournoux carved into rock and the high-altitude Maginot Line outposts. Religious heritage is represented by the Baroque Église Saint-Nicolas-de-Myre and the isolated Saint-Antoine-du-Désert, reflecting the region’s deep cultural and defensive history.

Historic Churches of Ubaye

The Ubaye Valley preserves a diverse collection of religious heritage, ranging from grand baroque-influenced parish churches to secluded high-altitude chapels. These sites reflect the region's history of transhumance and cross-border trade, often featuring traditional Alpine stonework, sundials, and ornate altarpieces. Notable examples include the remote church in Maurin at the valley's head and the Romanesque foundations of Saint-Pons, showcasing centuries of mountain devotion.

Outdoor Adventures

This collection highlights the rugged terrain of the Ubaye Valley and the Cottian Alps, centered around the Aiguille de Chambeyron, the highest peak in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The selection features high-altitude glacial lakes, including the Lac des Neuf Couleurs at 2,841 meters, and the Glaciers du Marinet, which are among the southernmost in the French Alps. Visitors can explore unique geological formations like the Cheminées de fées hoodoos, deep limestone chasms such as Gouffre Gérard, and technical climbing sectors at Falaise de Herbez.

Alpine Refuges & Bivouacs

This collection features essential mountain shelters across the Southern Alps and Valle Maira. It includes staffed alpine huts like Refuge du Chambeyron, situated at 2,626 meters, and remote, unmanaged bivouacs such as the metal-clad Bivacco Barenghi.
