Historic Fortifications

Birgu's defensive architecture represents the pinnacle of 16th-century military engineering. At its tip sits Fort Saint Angelo, the naval headquarters of the Knights of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. The landward side is protected by a multi-layered system of bastions and cavaliers, including the Bastion of Castille and the raised artillery platforms of St. James and St. John’s Cavaliers. The Couvre de Porte serves as a complex defensive gateway, showcasing the intricate outworks designed to repel Ottoman forces.

Fort Saint Angelo

Fort St. Angelo is a bastioned fort in Birgu, Malta, located at the centre of the Grand Harbour.

St. James Cavalier (tower)

A 16th-century raised artillery platform built by the Order of St. John to defend Birgu's land front. It provided a commanding view over the surrounding ditch and curtain walls.

Couvre de Porte

A complex defensive outwork and gateway system providing a protected entrance into Birgu. It was designed to shield the inner gates from direct artillery fire.

Bastion Castille

A prominent bastion on Birgu's land front, historically defended by the Langue of Castile and Leon. It played a critical role in repelling Ottoman attacks during the Great Siege.

St. John's Cavalier (tower)

A massive raised fortification designed to house heavy artillery. It overlooks the landward approach and the Kalkara Creek, providing defensive fire for the city's curtain walls.
