Bukhansan National Park: Unmissable Highlights

Bukhansan National Park features the historic Bukhansanseong Fortress, a 12.7-kilometer defensive wall originally constructed in 1711 during the Joseon Dynasty. This selection highlights key fortress gates like the high-altitude Baegunbongammun and the royal Daeseongmun, alongside archaeological treasures such as the Silla-era Monument of King Jinheung. Visitors can explore granite landmarks like Elephant Rock and access the trail network through the main information center. The trails connect historic mountain peaks with ancient stone architecture, offering insight into Seoul’s military history and natural geology.

Bugmun

The North Gate of the Bukhansanseong Fortress, situated along the ridge trail leading toward the park's northern peaks.

Tangchundaeseong

An impressive fortress with lots of history behind it. A nice place to explore on a sunny afternoon.

Baegunbongammun

The highest gate in Bukhansanseong, located 725 meters above sea level between Baegundae and Mangyeongdae peaks. It serves as a primary access point for hikers summiting the park's highest peak.

YongAm Gate

A secret auxiliary gate, or ammun, located on the eastern ridge of the fortress. It was designed for moving supplies and troops discreetly.

Jungseongmun

An inner gate built to provide a second line of defense for the fortress's command post. It is located along the main valley hiking path.

Daeseongmun

One of the largest gates of the Bukhansanseong Fortress, located on the southern ridge. It was historically used by Joseon kings entering the fortress.

elephant rock

A distinct granite formation on the mountain ridge that resembles the shape of an elephant.

Monument of King Jinheung of Silla

A replica of a 6th-century stone stele marking the border inspection by King Jinheung of the Silla Kingdom. The original is a designated National Treasure.

Bukhansanseong Information Center

Located at the main western entrance, this center provides trail maps, safety information, and historical context for the fortress area.
