Cyprus Religious Heritage

This collection spans centuries of Cypriot history, featuring the UNESCO-listed painted churches of the Troodos Mountains, such as Panagia tou Moutoulla and Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis, renowned for their Byzantine frescoes. The list also includes the opulent Kykkos Monastery and the 12th-century Macheras Monastery. In Nicosia, the transition of faiths is visible in the Gothic architecture of the Selimiye Mosque, formerly St. Sophia Cathedral, and the Ottoman-era Arab Ahmet and Omeriye mosques.

Church of Archangelos Michail

A UNESCO World Heritage site in Pedoulas dating to 1474. This small, timber-roofed church features a complete cycle of post-Byzantine frescoes and a distinctive local architectural style.

Omeriye Mosque

Believed to be the burial site of a Muslim prophet. Used to be a church before the Ottoman conquest.

Our Lady of Moutoullas Church

Moutoullas is a mountain village in the Nicosia District of Cyprus, at an elevation of 800 m in Marathasa Valley.

Faneroumeni Church

Built in 1872 within Nicosia's old city walls, this is the city's largest Orthodox church. It stands on the site of a medieval convent and houses a marble mausoleum dedicated to Cypriot clergy executed in 1821.

St. Nicholas of the Roof Church

A place of Orthodox worship in the Middle Ages, actually named after its heavy roof. Look out for the frescoes and the icons.

Arab Ahmet Mosque

Arab Ahmet Mosque is situated in the western Arab Ahmet Quarter of North Nicosia, Northern Cyprus. It was built in the late 16th century.

Chrysospiliotissa Church

A unique rock-cut cave church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, located in the village of Deftera. The subterranean sanctuary is carved directly into a sandstone cliff.

Panagia Podithou

One of the ten UNESCO churches. Often overlooked, but worth visiting for the marvellous, richly coloured frescoes.

Church Panagia to Asinou

This UNESCO-listed church near Nikitari dates to the 12th century. It is famous for its exceptionally well-preserved Byzantine frescoes, which represent some of the finest examples of Comnenian-era art in Cyprus.

Agias Theklas Monastery

Situated near Mosfiloti, this monastery is dedicated to the early Christian martyr Saint Thekla. It is known for its holy spring and the therapeutic mud found in the surrounding area.

Macheras Monastery

A historic 12th-century monastery located in the Troodos Mountains. It houses the miraculous icon of the Virgin of Macheras, attributed to Saint Luke, and maintains a strict communal lifestyle for its resident monks.
