Archaeological Sites & Ruins
France’s landscape preserves a timeline of human history spanning over 20,000 years. This collection features the Paleolithic cave paintings of Lascaux, the extensive Neolithic stone alignments at Carnac, and the monumental Roman engineering of the Pont du Gard. It also includes the Roman amphitheaters of Arles, the Gallic hillfort of Bibracte, and the dramatic ruins of medieval strongholds like Château de Peyrepertuse and the haunting remains of Jumièges Abbey. These sites offer insight into the architectural and cultural evolution of Western Europe.
Alignement de Kermario
The most impressive of the Carnac alignments, featuring 1,029 standing stones arranged in ten parallel rows stretching over one kilometer. The site includes a Neolithic dolmen used as a funerary chamber.
Alignement du Ménec
The primary site of the Carnac stones, consisting of 1,050 menhirs arranged in eleven rows. The formation spans nearly one kilometer and is anchored at both ends by the remains of semicircular stone circles known as cromlechs.
